Poland has officially received its first AH-64D Apache attack helicopters leased from the United States, marking a decisive step in the modernization of the Army’s aviation capabilities.

The handover ceremony took place on June 17 in Inowrocław, attended by the Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

“Today we are presenting a version that will primarily be used for training. The final version, the E model, will feature advanced monitoring, detection, visualization, and data transmission systems,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz. “These helicopters will be capable of attacking both air and ground targets and will share data with Abrams tanks and F-35 fighter jets.”

Billion-Dollar Investment and Strategic Planning

On August 13, 2024, Poland signed a $10 billion agreement with the U.S. for the acquisition of 96 AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters, including logistics support and training.

Until those models are ready, the United States will provide AH-64D helicopters under a lease agreement to support training for the Polish Armed Forces.

The first leased Apaches will be operated by the 1st Army Aviation Brigade, where Polish flight, maintenance, and support crews — some already trained in the U.S. — will begin training activities on home soil.

Second-Largest Apache Operator Worldwide

With the delivery of 96 AH-64E helicopters expected to begin in 2028 and conclude by 2032, Poland will become the second-largest Apache operator in the world, behind only the United States.

To make the project viable, the U.S. approved $3.08 billion in financing under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program in October 2024. Additionally, Poland signed contracts with General Electric for the supply of 210 T700-701D engines and established agreements for local component production and maintenance crew training.

Expanded National Capability

Warsaw is also investing in infrastructure to accommodate the advanced helicopters and ensure long-term operational autonomy. The installation of local maintenance and technical training capabilities will allow greater logistical and operational independence for the Polish Army.

With this initial delivery, Poland strengthens its strategic position within NATO and significantly enhances its aerial response capability in light of the regional geopolitical landscape.
